Leadbelly and Urban Folk

2 Mar

Here are the MP3s we played in class today.

For those interested in listening some more to other musical examples that we didn’t have time to cover today, I thought I’d make a few things available to you.

Here is the recording of Leadbelly I meant to play in class today exhibiting his potential appeal to the kinds of musicians that took part in the folk revival, and here is a recording of Bill Monroe that exemplifies more “drive” than the one we covered in class. Neither will be on the quiz (since they were not played in class).

As I mentioned, Leadbelly continues to be influential for many different artists and he was inducted into the Rock ‘n’ Roll Hall of Fame in 1988. During his lifetime, he recorded for numerous record labels (often to pay the bills) and since his death, there have been countless reissues of his music.

Below I have posted a version of Leadbelly performing “Irene” (a.k.a. “Goodnight Irene”) followed by a musical tribute to Leadbelly by The Weavers.
