Unit 3: São Paulo, Brazil

11 Mar

Listening Quiz 2 will need to be rescheduled. I propose March 20th as our new quiz date.

For Tuesday: In addition to the chapter from Davis’s Planet of Slums, I have assigned my own article “From Rio to São Paulo: Shifting Urban Landscapes in Brazilian Music’s New Global Strategies.” Remember, this article is part of my ongoing project; thus, the writing might be a little rough and the argument I’m making is far from set in stone. If you would like to listen to the music I discuss in the reading, you may download it here.

Since I will be at the national meeting of the Society for American Music this Friday, we will once again have to reschedule class. Sunday afternoon looks good from my end, but feel free to suggest otherwise in the comments. Here is the reading assigned for that mystery date: Shanna Lorentz’s “Zhen Brasil’s Japanese Groove.”

Next week we will be focusing on DJ-based music scenes in São Paulo. For Tuesday, March 20th, we will cover hip-hop in São Paulo. Please read this chapter by Derek Pardue that specifically addresses the notion of “periphery” in that city. On Thursday, March 23rd, we will cover Drum ‘n’ Bass in São Paulo. Please read Ivan Fontanari’s multimedia article on the subject (a computer will be helpful for reading this article).

A link to the music we covered last week will be forthcoming.

I have a film screening at 3 that Sunday that I absolutely need to attend, so either earlier in the day or another day would be ideal for me.

I will be on the road home until about 2:30 Sunday, give or take, so I would prefer later. Monday would be better (I have nothing until 5).

The last time I tried to schedule our make-up class for Monday, but things didn’t work out so well. I think it was the worst possible idea of many.

Are we still having the second listening quiz tomorrow ?

    Somehow I missed that. Nevermind.

It’s ok. Some of these blog posts are chock-full of info.

I would prefer to meet late Saturday morning, if that’s possible. I have conflicts during the rest of the weekend.

Unfortunately, Saturday is not an option.

If this coming weekend is too much of a squeeze, maybe we should consider doing a double-header either next Tuesday or next Friday. Instead of ending at 3:50PM, we’d go until 5:20PM (with a break).

I’d be fine with that on Tuesday, but I think that the Friday before spring break will likely have less than perfect attendance as is.
Also, that would make me late for the Bruce Springsteen concert that evening, but that’s just my personal conflict.

I agree with Ganga, a double header on Tuesday would work for me.

i’m fine with either day, as well, but i have to agree that scheduling the double header on friday would probably give a lot of people (particularly those who haven’t used any absences yet) more of a justification to skip and start vacation. not pointing fingers, just speaking from experience.

I think the double header day is the best option. Either day will work for me.
