Dakar, Day 1

3 Apr

Today will be the first class of the semester where we are not focused on a city in the Americas. Dakar is one of the more musically diverse cities in the world. Although I stated in the syllabus that the only reading assignment for today is from Planet of Slums, those of you with more interests in the music of the region might enjoy this optional reading. It serves as a broad overview, and I will be covering much of that content in today’s class.

For Friday, we will be discussing salsa in Dakar (and this article by Richard Shain).
