Open Thread on the Ethics of Listening

10 Apr

Today, we had a rather charged discussion about the ethics of listening to music that has been created as the result of heavily imbalanced power-dynamics. I thought I would open up the comments section to discuss creative (mis-)communication (Lipsitz) in world music as it applies to Dakar. Keep in mind that any of the musicians we have covered (and you as listeners) have options limited by habitus (Turino 120).

Many disparate sub-topics came up, such as determining the validity of making world music out of Muslim spiritual texts, the process of world music commodification, and “strategic inauthenticity” (Taylor). If you are not comfortable exposing yourself and your ideas but you still want to participate, you can email me privately and I can post for you anonymously.
